Why Synthetic Fuel Could Replace Electric Cars

Thanks to The Zebra for sponsoring today’s video. See how much money you can save today by comparing car insurance rates with a quick visit to bit.ly/TheZebraBumper

Synthetic fuels are fuels made from water and carbon dioxide from the air. You split the water into hydrogen and oxygen, and combine the oxygen with CO2 to create hydrocarbons. Basically what burning fuel does but in reverse. If the energy used to do this comes from a sustainable source (i.e. wind or solar) you will have net zero emissions, and none of the environmental impact of mining the metals used in batteries. This could effectively make ICE engines better for the environment than EVs.

Synthetic fuel will still put carbon into the atmosphere where it will produce all the same health problems associated with carbon emissions currently, it doesn't matter that it takes carbon out of the atmosphere, it puts it back in a different location creating localized pollution. The biggest problem with ICE drive systems is inefficiencies lost to friction, heat and incomplete combustion. There is no question, hands down that liquid fuel is more energy dense than batteries making it the best option currently for towing, long haul and some automotive sports, (electric has been creeping in and in some cases outperforming gas variants), but it will likely never escape the fact that it wastes the majority of its fuel, is subject to various environmental variables such as altitude, and it deposits that waste into the local atmosphere, regardless of its source. EV is the future, its power plant may be up for debate, but the electric motor is back for keeps, (yes, the first cars were electric).

EV's are "Outsourced emission vehicles" Not "Zero emission" There is a smoke stack somewhere producing that power. During a blackout, Tesla owners were charging theircars using portable gas generators. One EV charging station has a diesel generator supplying the power.

Eh, synthetic fuels are not that scaleable. And is expensive. Farming is not as sustainable as you want it to be. Also still has pretty bad particulate matter polution so use case in cities are not great at all. However car guys will find a use and a market for them. Primal urge for rumbling and vintage autos will hold down this market, and maybe airlines for transatlantic flights (but they also have huge scaling problems because they’re extremely expensive, Norwegian airlines increased it by a couple of percent and completely wiped out their profits) really to get synthetic fuels economical you need to solve cheap renewable energy. Like so fucking cheap it’s practically free. And with that you basically just get ev’s that run for 0$ so no sensible consumer would ever chose a gas car. Only for emontional reasons

The only problem with this process is its inherently inefficient. Every step of that process requires energy and boat loads of it. You would have to solve insanely cheap energy with solar or fusion and by that point why would you go through all that 5 step process to create fuel that’s extremely inefficient when you can just plug it into a battery. I just dont see it working it requires too much energy for too little benefit. I can maybe see a niche for it with rich car guys but thats about it

Did you hear what the innovations are going into the cybertruck battery? Because let me tell you. Fjrst the cathode is pure nickel cathode, no cobalt no nothing. The anode has a little bit more silicon, the lithium is sourced from Nevada clay deposits that will literally just dig up the clay, spin it, add salt and water (extremely over simplified), the cathode production is done in house for less resources. And the batteries themselves go through a dry coating which uses 10 times less energy when creating a battery. Also affect of lithium battery production is often over stated but whatever. If you wanna see like the full detailed description of all this shit go to the limiting factor channel he did a whole breakdown of these processes along with reviewing the patents involved.

Best option would be some of the newer nuclear power plants to produce the energy but cost will still be very expensive for the average driver when compared to just driving EVs, the industry most likely to benefit from this is the aviation industry since there aren't any real environmentally friendly alternatives to gas turbine engines and kerosene.

  71. Shanee Bahera

lolz its not just about keeping ice's relevant.... its also about being practical, for ev's they have shorter distances per charge than many gasoline vehicles. u have to replace infrastructure to support charging stations. only the big countries with well established infrastructure can only begin to think this. we cant really ship barrels of electricity i mean we can send charged batteries but the weight of them alone would cause a huge problem compared to oil and gasoline and even if they do get it their they dont have the infrastructure and charging stations nor the money to even purchase those kinds of vehicles so a loss of a huge chunk of market for car manufacturers as they would also have to have more facilities manufacture and maintain fleet of car exports based on ice and any chance of electrically charged battery bound for transport to other countries non existent which then comes in real estate and property required to build solar and wind farms and then taking into account winter months, storm consistency, angle of sun and space on property, what epa regs will be , the controversies that pop up and the ppl protesting for on said property around the world and who knows how much property could skyrocket. then certain regulations that will develop over decades that could wring out more money from these companies. this doesnt even start to fix the agriculture problem. yeah ev's are efficient powerhouses yeah maintenance might be better, but out of all the changes that happen, property costs, electricity costs, more car manufacturer buildings open and electricity manufacturing facilities holding onto redundant power sources in case green plant goes down for backup. u could easily be paying more monthly for ur bills, cars and insurance. how will this change relationships with countries all over the world, how will this effect the economy that was brought into relevance with oil. and it goes on and on and on and on! we arent going full electric, were not all electric for a reason, theres to much that is still speculative, attaining data annually. theres to many unknowns of the effect changing over will be and the amount of money to create an infrastructure like that would be vast. ev's dont follow the money trail, nor will ice's be going anywhere anytime soon.

In opposition to your Elon Musk Hydrogen vid, this one cuts the cake (do you even say that?). New Tech is expensive - Yes. The Major Point is: We need synthetic fuel. But NOT (!!!) for Cars. For Planes! Energy wise, an electric car could go about 10 to 20 times farther than an ICE-Car with the same energy that you would need to produce e-fuel (shipping not included). That is horribly inefficient. Same as it is today: to make gasoline, you already need lots of energy (mostly electric). It is estimated (german Author Andreas Bunkert: "Endenergiebezogene Analyse Diesel versus Elektromobilität") that for producing 2 gallons of petrol you need as much energy as 42 kWh, with wich an electric car could go 120 miles comfortably. Cons: not all of that energy is electric. Idk how much tbh. Conclusion: - Refining oil to gas is energeticly inefficient as EFF. - And producing E-Fuel is ... WAY WORSE! For aviation though, there just isn't something better, there we need the energy density of liquid fuel and humanity won't engineer its way around it for quite some time. Thx 4 reading.

I remember quite a few years ago there was a company working on microencapsulated hydrogen and had been successful. They mysteriously disappeared. They had projected a gallon of microencapsulated hydrogen could be potentially had for around $2.50 or so a gallon with that price steadily decreasing as production techniques improved. It was not dangerous and would flow like regular liquid gasoline and could keep internal combustion engines running like normal, no excessive heat etc. The only issue they were having at the time was hydrogen tends to dry things out and they had to produce it with some sort of moisturizer to go along with it. I recall they had had some success with castor oil. It was an amazing and simple solution and environmentally friendly since the byproduct of hydrogen combustion with oxygen is water. An elegant and simple solution with far reaching ramifications for the oil and transportation industry. I wonder what could have ever happened to them....? It was so mysterious how they disappeared virtually overnight when they were negotiating contracts to begin testing and projected delivery to normal gas stations by 2005. This was way back in 2002.

Yes they’re trying to keep pollutants in the air to kill your children yes praise Porsche for doing something stupid it’s all electric is the future not synthetic fuels that are still going to pollute the air you morons still has to become busted by a spark or something which makes pollutants for the air toxins oh my god what country are you from are you that stupid

but hear me out ....if you produce the electric cars...with electric solar panel, and wind power to power the plants ...and also use eelectric trucks to transport the electric cars....and also use solar and wind power to charge the cars? (cause we can do that...) will it be the same amount of CO2 produced for the electric car? also,....gases that come out the exhaust ....they are all fun and games...untill you really see the difference of "with them" and "without them" ....i mean i do like the gasoline car....but ...for day to day use ...electric for the win, especially in the city, especially with public transport and taxis....and have a second car with gasoline/diesel for fun and games(and have a sportier car etc) ...i love caars....no ..i love vehicles ...2, 3 , 4, 8, 12 wheels ...with tracks, hell ..even with propellers or jet power....but still ...for use in the city ....where you lack the vegetation to absorb the amount of co2 we produce....electric is the way! and big oil companies need to get cut the slack.. i ranted....i know ...i'm gonna get hate.....but still ...you have to be reasonable...and know that this will likely happen, but i am 100% positive that the combustion engine will not dissapear ...it will most likely change a bit...

Electric cars will still pollute because you're literally making newer cars when we already have enough and you're making cars that pollute more to make

From a naive point of view, I prefer e-fuel over EV. First, batteries have low energy density than fuel, limiting the range and power of the EV and 'electronic planes'. E-fuel can solve this problem. Second, battery manufacturing is not necessarily environmentally friendly. A lot of materials need to be mined from the earth to make batteries, which can damage the environment. On the other hand, manufacturing e-fuel is a much simple and clean process.

Don't just focus on the fuel. The complexity of ICE cars dictates how maintenance and the making of ICE engines creates pollutions.

  121. achan275

    achan2756 วันที่ผ่านมา

@Yayayayya but the overall life time pollution including production is only 50% of ICE, and if the charging location is where green energy used (hydro, wind, solar, nuclear, etc), that number will becomes only around 10% of ICE. On top of that, 70% of the battery can be reused or recycled.

And making of EVs creates more pollution.

I can see something like this being used for long haul flights and transport, but individuals are not moving to electric simply because of the emissions. The cost of fuel is a large driving factor for a lot of people, and electric cars will ALWAYS have any ICE car beat in that regard, especially in this because you still need the electricity to make the fuel (adding more steps to the process, and with each added step there is less efficiency), and on top of that burning a fuel to make rotational energy is EXTREMELY inefficient while using an electric motor to make rotational energy is extremely efficient, meaning that not only is the energy cheaper, but you use less of it. Add in that the power plants are more efficient than an ICE engine even when they do use fossil fuels, as most of the time they use the heat to create steam/pressure to make the power, and larger engines are just more efficient than smaller ones to start with, and it is a recipe that leads to electric cars just being better options for daily drivers for most people. If you ever want to look deeper into a subject on why, Engineering Explained does great videos over this topic and i would recommend watching them.

Or Porsche could just leave the fuel at synthetic diesel and bring back the diesel car... but you know make sure they run clean which would more likely happen with the fuel being clean. Also Batteries have all the same pollution that building clean fuel factories does and they still push those things.

its a massively inefficient way to power a car compared to batteries, probably about 10x the electricity required taking into count the efficiency of gas engines vs. electric motors
