Woodturning - The Twist!!

Welcome to this weeks woodturning video.

Woodturning - Goblet With A Twist (Double Helix)

In this woodworking video I use a woodturning lathe to turn a seasoned piece of Apple wood burl into an ornate goblet, (with a twist).

When woodturning a piece like I find it important to nibble away at it until I see what shape the wood wants to be, this is what is so enjoyable about woodturning. big log to bowl (little bowl) but i find removing the wood in layers allows me to find the best possible shape.

For some reason, when I see people use those Dremel tools to do stuff like this, or making statues... there is a guy making canes also... I feel like there is little actual "skill" involved. This is of course not true, there is some skill involved after all, but it still feels less of a accomplishments when you know people are just sanding away basically removing little material at a time. Compared to someone using masonry tools to create one of those stone statues... you can't compare.

  101. Jack Mack Woodturning

    Jack Mack Woodturning8 วันที่ผ่านมา

Thanks for the lesson on wood 😆 Yeah I hear what your Saying. It makes wood carving more accessible to people who don’t yet understand wood as a material. I don’t think this is so much a bad thing as a nice gate way to those who want to learn more. As I say, I carve wood with traditional tools for a living ( THnick is my fun on the side) so I understand the snobby feeling you can get when you feel others are cheating. At the end of the day it’s the result that matter not how one got to the destination. We both know that the majority of the time it’s quicker and yields better results to cut wood, but to do that you need years of practice, skill comes after. Don’t be disheartened by people finding an easier route into carving when you see it. Embrace it/them and encourage. Help spread the knowledge you now possess because others decided to pass it down the line. Thanks for watching 😊👍🏻

  102. GOM

    GOM8 วันที่ผ่านมา

@Jack Mack Woodturning Imagine you have a big block of wood. If you now grab a chisel, let's assume it is a very sharp one and now you try to carve something out of that wood block. Wood is not like steel where the material is the same density all around, in wood you have softer spots and harder spots, especially where branches grew. Also because wood had to grow the fibers aim in some direction or the other. Even with a devilish chisel or knife of any kind you have to "work with the wood" and have some experience with wood overall to anticipate and know some things. Most of the dremel tool tip you can buy... are like sandpaper, a file or a rasp. With those mostly you not need to take into account most of the intricacies hardwood brings as a material since they "grind away" the wood instead of the cutting and shaving operation you do with chisels and knives. That's why I personally think... if one would want to make a statue, like lets say a human skull... as long as you not screw up all the marking process... with a dremel it is rather easy to carve it out.

  103. Jack Mack Woodturning

    Jack Mack Woodturning8 วันที่ผ่านมา

I hear what your saying mate but my pint is that there is a difference between gouges a rotary tools. I too make my living carving wood with gouges but in this instance wanted to try out the dremel, I’ve carved many trusts and helixes the traditional way and can say for sure that it’s far easier with a pull saw and a sharp chisel. I like that you chose the think out loud. This is what instigates discussion and helps us learn from each other’s experience as we unravel it. I think you missed my point about a “desired shape” for me that shape would be the shape you hold in your mind while using any tool to achieve or reach that finished shape. As you say, you goal is to achieve a certain “hand made” look. I do struggling to understand why you think controlling a rotary tool vs control if a gouge is less skilful, is it because of the skill involved in keeping you gouges sharp that makes you view it as more of an art form? I turn wood using traditional turning tools and cringe when I see videos of people “turning wood” with modern carbide scrapers. The difference between these two approaches I find to be the same as your thoughts in your initial comment. But having tried both ( albeit briefly) I know that the latter requires no skill and is very limited. Carving with rotary tools I find much more difficult than with a gouge. 🤷🏼‍♀️

@Jack Mack Woodturning I am a Furniture Carpenter. Yes hardwood furniture... and yes with carvings. However what I carve is basic stuff, like grapes, grape-leaves and the like... for "antique-looking" wine cabinets mostly. Yes I used a dremel... a few times but not for work since what I make for a living is not done by just achieving a desired shape... it has to look "hand made" as well. Anyway, I am sorry for the two comments I made. You do not really know me... and I do not really know you. I didn't mean to attack or devalue your work seen in the video. I was just thinking loud... with my hands typing, not believing that anyone actually reads comments on THnick. Being a woodworker, specializing in things that have to look "hand made"... seeing as most people I meet do not have the skill to do what I do... then seeing that those people suddenly with a dremel can create amazing pieces annoys me somewhat, to be frank. So yeah nothing against you in particular. Sorry about that.

  105. Jack Mack Woodturning

    Jack Mack Woodturning8 วันที่ผ่านมา

@GOM So achieving a desired shape is more impressive if you use a hammer and chisel ?? Have you ever used a dremle my friend? Or a chisel ?? I assure you, removing wood with a chisel is much easier

This piece can’t be made from a smaller piece of wood. The largest measurements of the original piece are the same as the largest measurement of the final piece. As I professional production woodturner I create around 8 cubic yards of shavings per month All my wood shavings are used for animal bedding and them omitted for a vegetable garden. I don’t produce waste from any of my work. Hope that helps you understand the process a little better 👍🏻

That's why i said its osm

@Jack Mack Woodturning why not if u try to ... Find a shorter wood piece instead of carving with such big pieces start with hand crafting or cutting the edges instead of carving. Some wood turning books suggest using a drill press to cut the spiral. The work is supported in a v-block and a series of holes is drilled, then the spirals worked down with rasps and rifflers. But the Dremel looks faster

Hey. I use the extensions that comes with the dremle.. neither art gets hot.

  179. Jack Mack Woodturning

    Jack Mack Woodturning7 วันที่ผ่านมา

Hi G. Yeah I think they will always generate heat, they are built to withstand though. As long as I am not burning the wood and don’t touch the tip it’s all good! 😉👍🏻

@Jack Mack Woodturning Thanks for the link. Wow, that bit was doing WORK! Does your Dremel get very very hot in the process? I find after 10 or so minutes of continuous use mine is very hot to the touch, regardless of what I'm using it for. In any case, what a fantastic piece of work. Thank you for sharing!

how much weight can it hold tho?

  210. Jack Mack Woodturning

    Jack Mack Woodturning12 วันที่ผ่านมา

🤣… balance across the axis of rotation is more of a factor than weight. So far it’s managed anything I can load on to it.. there a maximum size the late can turn between centres which is 20” dia by 60” length. In my experience a piece of wood this size even if it’s extremely dense and wet won’t weight anymore than 250kg if that.
